Our Principles

We’re embracing a new way of thinking about ranching.

Regenerative agriculture is a grassroots revolution that can save our ranches, build healthy soil, healthy people, and healthy communities.

Build Healthy Soils

Healthy soil grows healthy plants and animals, and is foundational to a functioning landscape. We utilize planned grazing to implement tried and true soil health principles to regenerate land so that it can thrive for generations. In doing so, water infiltration rates increase – reducing erosion, improving water quality in streams, and replenishing aquifers. Healthy soils enhance the natural processes by which impressive amounts of carbon dioxide are captured by the process of photosynthesis and pumped into the soil. Ultimately, we produce more forage that’s healthier for the livestock and provides us with nourishing food.

Enhance Biodiversity

Animals, plants and fungi are woven together in nature in a complex and magnificent tapestry. When planned grazing is done well, this recreates the conditions under which grassland ecosystems co-evolved together with migrating herds of grazing mammals. Plants, animals, insects and soil microbes thrive. By utilizing regenerative grazing techniques, we can enhance the biodiversity of a degraded landscape.

Planned Grazing

We utilize livestock to build healthy soil, produce nutritious food for our community, and develop financially viable ranches. By carefully managing the cattle with portable electric fencing and low-stress stockmanship, we can control the location, timing, duration, and density of the herd to manage the landscape in order to obtain our desired goals and objectives. We record this orchestrated tapestry using PastureMap so that we can coordinate our data with our management records. When done well, this recreates the conditions under which grassland ecosystems co-evolved together with migrating herds of grazing mammals.

Holistic Ranch Management

Land planning and livestock management is key to a productive and resilient ranch, and can have an impact on soil health, water cycles, wildlife and their habitat, human well-being, and our greater ecosystem. Regenerative ranching starts with creating a comprehensive management plan that identifies and optimizes potential costs and benefits of our management practices. We carefully monitor and track the effects of our ranch management choices, which allows us to obtain quick and actionable feedback to support our decision making. Holistic Management is the foundation, among other tools, of our or ranch management program.

“The soil is the great connector of lives, the source and destination of all. It is the healer and restorer and resurrector, by which disease passes into health, age into youth, death into life. Without proper care for it we can have no community, because without proper care for it we can have no life.”

— Wendell Berry
